This pocket forest has been created in an elementary school in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Designed by horticulturist, Katherine Pakradouni, this forest provides a biodiverse garden in a neighborhood with few trees and parks due to historical redlining.
This project is the first of its kind to showcase a densely planted native pocket forest method on a Los Angeles Unified School campus, offering students a hands-on learning experience about the connection between local plants, indigenous history, and the significance of supporting local wildlife and pollinators.
While the district is increasingly supportive of greening initiatives, this project serves as a shining example of what is possible on school campuses.

“The pocket forest at Mid-City’s Prescott will be an amazing attraction and living laboratory lending to the school’s science focus. The green space will promote clean air as well as a feeling of peace, tranquility, and emotional well-being.”

Mid-City’s Prescott School
The Mid-City’s Prescott School of Enriched Sciences, located in the West Adams neighborhood in Los Angeles, offers a unique learning experience for elementary school students. It encourages students to think critically and act as experts in three science fields: life, earth, and physical sciences.
Supported by dedicated parents and teachers, this forest will create a community building experience for families and students.
