By providing an accessible green space, the project encourages people to foster a deeper appreciation for the environment and its conservation.
It offers an opportunity for individuals to engage with the natural world, learn about local ecosystems, and actively contribute to the preservation of urban biodiversity.
Through the collaborative efforts of the community, this initiative aims to build a sustainable and harmonious relationship between humans and nature, ensuring a greener and healthier future for generations to come.

Average of Tallest 3 Trees
While the survival rate of the planted trees is estimated at 87%, there were many new saplings (mostly from Acer pseudoplatanus) growing by themselves. Including them, the survival rate would be slightly above 100%.
Although there was an intense de-weeding activity with additional mulch in June, the weeds have grown strong again, possibly due to continuous rainfall, but this should be considered for future projects (probably more mulch necessary).
The pine trees (Pinus sylvestris) are almost all dead likely due to alkaline soil), but the other species are doing fine. Some have mildew or other disease marks on the leaves but this does not seem to affect the general development. In the forest, different insects were observed (ants, bees, small bugs, butterflies), along with earthworms in the soil.

“With this project we are helping a new neighborhood to build community and connections through nature, while increase climate resilience in a harsh environment.”

Why the city of Griesheim?
This SUGi Pocket Forest is of great importance in this new developing area of the city of Griesheim, which due to local regulations, has few existing trees in the streets and as such, has been exposed to considerate air traffic noise.
Additionally, the area has been exposed to the neighboring arid farmland, which blows dry and dusty air into the area. The forest will contribute to mitigate all these factors and build climate resilience in years to come.
