We have planted this pocket forest in a densely populated urban area, close to the Lys River.
The former site - a barren lawn adjacent to a residential apartment block - lacked any significant natural life and was largely unused, particularly during the hot summer months due to the absence of shade-providing trees. This project has transformed the space into a flourishing ecosystem filled with native plants such as Silver Birch and Common Hazel, offering a sanctuary for the 300 residents where they can reconnect with Nature. Children from the nearby primary school, Buitengewone Lagere School De Octopus, also participated in the planting and help to maintain the forest.
By enhancing local biodiversity, providing shade, and creating a cooling effect, the forest conceals the adjacent concrete car park with lush vegetation. The forest is used as a natural playground for the children, deepening their appreciation of Nature by learning through play. The project engages both adults and children, fostering a sense of community as people come together to improve the space for all.

"With the planting of the pocket forest at Residence Lys (Spinmolenplein Ghent), we want to green the bare and withering lawn. The forest will create interesting views, and at the same time act as a screen for the adjacent car parks. It makes the grass areas interesting again for the residents, who can cool down and experience nature there. By cooperating with the neighbouring primary school and involving them in the planting, we can raise children's awareness of nature in the city."
