St Kevin’s National School sits in the southern Dublin suburb town of Greystones, in one of the few areas of Ireland to ever experience temperatures around 30°C.
To help counteract the effects of these rising temperatures, which make summers increasingly challenging for residents and visitors alike, we are planting a pocket forest within the school grounds. This green space will bring the students much-needed relief in hot summers, offering a cool, shaded area where they can relax and enjoy Nature. The pocket forest will also improve the air quality of the surrounding area, with the school situated close to one of Greystone’s busiest roads.
This project builds on the school’s previous environmental efforts, including the creation of a pollinator garden that the students have actively contributed to. With the addition of the pocket forest, the children will have the opportunity to further their environmental education by planting and learning about dense, biodiverse forests.
