We are planting this pocket forest of trees and wildflowers on a residential street in Kensington and Chelsea. The avenue is already flanked by a few mature trees, providing ample shade and a sense of greenery in this otherwise concrete setting. Nestled between the residential buildings and the street, this pocket forest will transform the small plot into a natural habitat, creating a sanctuary for local biodiversity and wildlife to thrive.
The pocket forest will serve as a vital habitat for a variety of species, including insects, birds, and small mammals, offering a crucial refuge for the local wildlife. This green space will enhance air quality by acting as a natural sponge, effectively absorbing harmful pollutants from the environment. Cheyne Gardens will also greatly benefit the community, providing a tranquil spot where residents and passers by can connect and interact with Nature, fostering a sense of peace and well-being in the urban landscape.

Forest Design
We have crafted a forest design that evokes the charm of British woodlands while incorporating native hedgerow species. Key species like oak provide vital support for small mammals and birdlife, such as squirrels and jays, which rely on acorns for winter storage, burying them in the ground and tree cavities to endure the colder months. This behavior also promotes seed dispersal.
In spring, blue tits and great tits synchronize the hatching of their eggs with the emergence of oak leaves, which host large numbers of caterpillars, including the winter moth. Oaks are known for supporting the highest biodiversity of insect herbivores among British plants. Additionally, species like hawthorn, hazel, and elder contribute to local biodiversity through their symbiotic relationships. They offer a staggered food source and vital pollen for urban pollinators and other insects. Dog rose adds a touch of beauty with its vibrant wild blooms, while guelder rose provides passers by with clusters of pure white flowers, enhancing the visual appeal of the forest.
“This forest will bring colour, vibrancy and natural life to the streets of Kensington & Chelsea, bringing people closer to the magic and joy of Nature.”
