Veltwijk School, located just outside Antwerp in the densely populated Ekeren region, has taken a step towards promoting environmental sustainability with the planting of a 100 Sq m pocket forest. Recognizing the importance of green spaces in urban areas, and the positive impact of Nature on children, the school has transformed an unused plot on their grounds into a thriving natural habitat.
Twenty-five students took part in the planting and will continue to monitor the forest’s progress as it grows, serving as a dynamic living classroom and an outdoor learning environment for all pupils in the school. Veltwijk Forest also promotes respect for Nature, empowers students to take responsibility for the environment, and supports their physical and mental well-being. In addition, the pocket forest provides a sanctuary for local wildlife.

Forest Design
This forest design envisions a 100-square-meter pocket forest within the school grounds. It features approximately 300 trees, planted densely (3 trees per square meter) within a roughly oval shape, divided by a small pathway. The area is naturally enclosed by existing hedges and grass, creating a secluded and naturalistic green space.
